Loved the location. This historic part of the village is so quaint and charming, and authentic. The breakfast was great, the room was lovely. But most of all we enjoyed walking around the old town and exploring a few of the nearby villages.
It was so difficult to find this place though. The signage was not good and we ended up driving around the exterior of the compound at least 6 times before parking and walking in to get assistance.
lobby is spacious and good atmosphere
This lovely, former 12th. century hospital, was built by Saint Dominic on the remains of a palace belonging to the Monarchs of Navarra in order to lodge the pilgrims who were following the Route to Santiago is well worth the visit. It is located cater cornered across the small plaza from the 13th. century cathedral. Should no rooms be available, the newly opened Paradore Santo Domingo Bernardo de Fresneda ( named after the Archbishop of Zaragoza and confessor of Felipe II ) in the former convent of San Francisco is conveniently located nearby and may be available. I last visited there in the 1980's and have been pleased with the updating of the facilities.
With the interuption of the strike the remaining staff was superb in the service they provided. This included the front desk, dining room (breakfast only, we took other meals out) and maid service. All excellent.
The Cathedral was a gem, restaurants in the village, at least the ones we visited, were ony average.
The Parador is in a beautiful building opposite the cathedral. Breakfast, as always in paradors, was excellent.
The room and bathroom were a bit tired and dated
Beautiful Camino hospital building cleverly added to to provide comfortable modern hotel. Located within historic area of SDdlCalzada. Helpful staff. All to excellent Parador standards.
No information given at the time of booking regarding access to the hotel by car, ended up driving down some steps!
Beautiful and restful ambience. Staff are polite and gracious. Food is excellent.
There are 2 Parador hotels in this small town and I did not realize this. It took a long time to establish which Parador I was actually booked into. I also had difficulty in actually finding the hotel in the old part of the town. From the time I arrived into the town, it took me over one hour to find the hotel in what is actually a very small town.
Pleasant staff and delightful interior
Access was very difficult because the centre is closed to traffic. Also as there are 2 Paradors in Santo Domingo, the signposting is very confusing.
We had an excellent meal in the hotel restaurant and I would recommend guests have dinners there. The public spaces are lovely and a convenient place to spend some time.
They did not have information about buses for guests that are not driving. As there are only two buses peer day to Bilbao, the timetable is every important.
The building was incredible
We had specifically asked for a double room and received one with 2 singles pushed together. The bedcovers were worn and shabby and the room tired. The basic meal was alright if not inspiring and was not particularly warm but coffee at €5.00 was overpriced as was the wine. Breakfast was OK. I object to being charged €14 euros for on site parking or €5.00 for parking on an unsurfaced lot near by. All in all I felt it incredibly bad value for money
Great room, very friendly staff, lovely location, perfect luxury stopover whilst walking the Camino
The building and ambience
Difficult to find and entering the square.Clear mud maps necessary
Lovely setting in historic town centre. The Parador benefits from secure (underground) parking and is right next to the cathedral. It provides an oasis of calm.
Like all paradores this one doesnt serve evening meals until 20.30 - far too late for many northern europeans. Fortunately there are splendid restaurants nearby.
Silence and peaceful night.
